Okay so everyone knows my son does not like the car. We live in LA so it's about a 2 1/2 to 3 hour drive to Palm Springs and thanks to some ideas from other mommies and some I came up with we had a great vacation with very few meltdowns. The picture on the right is Ethan playing with his friend Enza (our friend's daughter) at the Marriott Villas in Palm Desert.
Here are the 10 things that helped make it a great vacation:
1. I bought Ethan new toys he had never seen before so that he was entertained on the way there.
2. I left right before it was his nap time so that he spent some of the car ride sleeping.
3. Ethan is only 9 months old and only has 2 teeth so I put yummy frozen fruit pieces (mangos and grapes) in these little meshy things so that he had something to safe chew and snack on. Plus, he likes trying new food. Tip: buy the colored meshy things the white ones get stained.
4. I also played his CDs (some of the time).
5. We got a 1 bedroom so that when we put him to bed at 7:30 we weren't stuck - unable to watch TV and hang out. Ideally I would like to have a 2 bedroom because he woke up early every day and wouldn't go back to sleep because we were sharing a room. Also, it's not as romantic.
6. I brought disposable bibs and take & toss spoons. It was nice to do minimal cleaning on the trip.
7. Since we drove I was able to bring his little chair for feedings.
8. The hotel provided a pack & play so we didn't need to bring one or worry about him jumping off the bed. My son I would never leave him laying on a bed.
9. Earth's Best makes these canned meals like "Apple Yogurt and Oatmeal" for breakfast and "Chicken and Sweet Potatoes" for dinner. I brought a bunch of those so I didn't have to wash bowls.
10. While out to dinner I would give him cloth napkins and menus to play with. I also would give him a little bread or roll which was really fun for him.
Please post any ideas for easy travel you have! It takes a village!
